The Plea For Biodiversity
We have heard many times in class about biodiversity and have all heard the lectures. Biodiversity is important, biodiversity is in danger, we need biodiversity... Common pleas, but the message really has not gone through.
Why do we need to care about Biodiversity?
Well thats a good question with a long answer. It all started some million years ago when life originated in some primordial ooze. More likely it simultaneously emerged in several different piles of ooze, but thats a discussion for a different blog. We all know about evolution. One creature develops and adapts forming another new creature. Well the thing is this just doesn't happen by itself. Genetic mutations occur and because of that we have variability and diversity. That diversity is what enables the differences within and outside of species. Without this diversity we would have a radically different world. We have to have diversity because that is what separates things and allows differences to work together. We learned as children that the world is built from many interlinked organisms and systems that work together. This is biodiversity. Although each organism may seem the same they all do a job that is special for the area that they speciated in. In other words: they grew to be what they were where they were for a reason. Through mutation and survival of the fittest and adaptation they are that way. I was not random chance.
Nature had millions of years to perfect its techniques and form the proper organism for each area to make things work correctly. That is why it is important for people to realize when invasive species emerge and threaten native organisms that it is 99% of the time our fault and messing up that delicate balance that nature took so long to arrange in the first place.
Next time you here about an organism from somewhere else destroying native species think about the specialization and the jobs that won't be done the way they were supposed to be. We loose tons of species due to invasive species and it is us that lose.
WE SHOULD CARE BECAUSE WE DEPEND ON BIODIVERSITY TO BE KEPT AT ITS PROPER LEVEL SO IT CAN SUSTAIN US.
